A roll forming tap, also called a form tap, creates internal threads by plastically deforming material rather than cutting it, resulting in chip-free threads that are often stronger and have a better surface finish than those from a conventional cutting tap. It displaces metal, pushing it into the thread's valleys, which makes it best suited for ductile materials like aluminum, copper, and certain steels, and requires a larger pilot hole than a cutting tap.
